The Thing About Parenting...

You know, you read eight million books while you're pregnant + ask all of your mommy friends for advice so that by the time your sweet peanut comes into the world you think you're super prepared. Too bad you were wrong. The thing they don't tell you about parenting is that really you are undergoing more vigorous activities than Olympic athletes. No really, parenting legitimately should be an Olympic sport. Let me give you some examples why.
1} You give up sleep. Like for 18 years. Even if you're blessed with an angel baby in the sleeping department, guaranteed you will never sleep as well as you previously did. In the early days its out of fear/nerves. When you reach toddler-Dom it's because after the little one goes to sleep you have to be productive and REclean the house that your wildabeast destroyed all day or anything else you had high hopes of doing during waking hours. I'm not even going to breach teenage years, I know how bad I was so I am bound to suffer through some hellacious years with BK.
2} You get way more physical activity than you used to pre-baby ( even if you don't go to the gym anymore). I am constantly on the go with BK. For one, she has the attention span on a peanut so we are constantly changing activities. For two, she has the ferocity of a hurricane and creates similar paths of destruction that I continuously run around trying to clean up. Lastly, when IF you eat it is usually a much more wholesome meal. I cook better for BK. Toddler eating is a fight of its own, but on the days that she does eat I have to be sure to get the best food possible in her. Therefore you eat better too.
3} Changing a diaper 100% should be an Olympic sport. Once your child surpasses the age of four months they no longer lay sweetly and coo at you while you change their diaper very easily in about 30 seconds. They start kicking + bucking + rolling + arching, pretty much doing anything that makes it impossible for you to smoothly and efficiently change a diaper. You're forced to resort to extreme tactics. Bribery works well. The "evil eye" is hit and miss. Sometimes i enlist extra help so i dont get hit by a flailing limb. But at least once a month, at least in the summertime, you have to add in he dreaded diaper cream to equation. It's cold, it's thick, and its messy. Sounds fun right? It's not. Well not until I was introduce to Dr. Smith's Diaper Ointment. It has been our saving grace this summer, especially with all of our time on the go. We keep one in the swim/beach bag and one in the diaper bag. I highly recommend it!
And now Dr. smith's is available nationwide at Walgreen's stores, and you have the chance to celebrate their new venture! You can win a $50 Walgreen's gift card and a supply of diaper rash cream! Just enter using he widget below. You won't regret it!

4} Children make EVERYTHING better. Literally everything. Though things may take more planning, the joy you get in return is SO worth it. I have never been happier. And hey, winning an Olympic medal must come in pretty damn close to parenthood.
So tell me, what were you surprised to learn about parenthood?

This post was sponsored by Dr. Smith's but all thoughts are my own.

It's All About the Balance

Hey, hey, hey! I am ashamed at my lack of blogging lately, but I am also not going to lie I have been thoroughly enjoying our summer. S is finally back from all of his work travel, I got myself a little part-time j.o.b. {that I love}, we got family pictures taken, BK is walking all over and a 100% toddler that is into everything, we took a mini trip to the OBX, and it is hot as hades here. We spend most of our days at the beach, meals are usually cooked outside, the inside of our home often looks like a tornado hit it, and we have just been making the most of our time together.

I do need to be better though, I need to allow a little more time that is just about me. I miss writing, writing is such an escape for me and it truly brings me so much joy. So I'm determined to find the balance.

How do y'all do it? When is your designated "blogging time"?

And because no post should go without pictures...

Do NOT Sext your father in law...

My husband has been gone for nine days. Now don't get me wrong, to many, many admirable couples, nine days of separation is nothing. I mean really its the equivalent of  a Spring Break vacation with a hangover on either side.

However to me. To me it's long, it's cold, and its damn lonely. I have a teething toddler damnit! And she's getting molars at that. So there are my excuses and this is the result.... I SEXT my father in law. Yes you read that right. Now go say a prayer for me. No really, do it.

This is a snippet of what my phone book looks like. I thought I was being "grown and mature" just using everyone's first and last names, whelp obviously I need to be a little less mature and embrace nicknames more.

See how I could accidentally send a text mentioning solo shower activities to the man above my husband? His name is right above, and damn that autotext prediction. I mean i guess better to him than a girl that babysat for us maybe twice. Especially when I'd already begun said "solo activities" and they would be best performed without the phone.

Well damn me and my need for speed. I waited nine days before taking matters into my own hands {literally}. Nine more minutes of carefully placed texting wouldn't have killed anything, though those few short minutes did manage to destroy my pride.

I died. Part of me died right there.

So now that I've learned that "sexting" is out, any ideas on how to keep the spice alive in my relationship? Buehler? Anyone? Anyone?

Finding My Passion

Yesterday I had a job interview, my first interview in five years. To say I was nervous is a complete understatement, I mean I legit had an anxiety attack on Monday. It wasn't just that I was going to be interviewing for the first time in f.o.r.e.v.e.r, it was so much more than that. It was the idea that I would be leaving BK, that BK might be going to a preschool full time. She is smart, she is so ready for the interaction, BK would totally rock preschool. I would probably be the one suffering from serious separation anxiety.  Is my little mama heart ready to give up my time with her? I mean I know it has to be done eventually, it's just wondering if "eventually" is right now.

And, to be completely honest I really fear failing. Putting yourself out there is hard. I don't think anyone truly enjoys feeling vulnerable, and that was exactly how I felt going into the interview. I fear failing. I fear still not knowing exactly what I want to do with the rest of my life.

So I survived the interview. I dressed up. I got some quality adult interaction. And it was good. I might not get the job, but I'm ok with that. And you know what, today I have another interview and this one I am actually really excited about. Wish me luck!

The Nitty Gritty

I'm linking up with the super fabulous Erin from Living in Yellow. She asked some real humdingers, but these questions might give you a little more insight to the "real" me.

1. If you could do one thing differently in your life, what would it be? I would have to say college. I slacked off, dropped courses, and took wayyy too long to graduate. If I could go back I would buckle down and get it done.

2. Where do you see yourself in five years? Content. I suffer from severe wanderlust, in all areas of my life, so I'm hoping to have a few things figured out by then. Mainly career wise, but I wouldn't be opposed to our family relocating either.

3. Do you honestly want kids? Considering we have BK I think that answer is obvious. She is the light of our lives, and we are thankful for every second we've gotten with her. Do we want to give her a sibling? Yes. But if God doesn't have that in store for us, I would be completely happy with just her.

4. What has been the best moment of your life so far? The day that Brooklyn was born. After we had visitors, after things had calmed down. It was quiet in our room. The lights were dim. BK was softly coo'ing. Stephen was holding her and the look on his face is one I'll never forget. It is my perfection.

5. What is your life theme song? Hmm, I'm a big music lover so this is hard. I would have to say She Talks to Angels or Meet Virginia.

6. What is one thing you have yet to accomplish that you want to do before you die? Find my career niche. I'm still working on that one. And travel to Europe. I need to cross that off my bucket list.

7. If you could choose one thing to be known for, what would it be? My heart. I'm a giver and a nurturer by nature, I hope other people see that. I want people to say "she had the kindest heart."

8. If you could do anything you wanted right in this very moment (no consequences, no fear, etc), what would it be? Hop on a plane and take the trip of a lifetime. Italy, Greece, Turkey, Fiji. Ooo and Africa.

9. What has been the most challenging moment in your life? Probably when my parents divorced. It was a really hard time for me.

10. Summarize yourself in one word. Exciting. I'm pretty much down for any adventure, I love to have fun and I embrace change. I try to always have a good time. And if not exciting, then Devoted. I am 1000% devoted to my family and friends and would do absolutely anything I could fo them.

So that's that. Tomorrow is Friday, woo hoo! And this mama is getting a dirty martini!

Lightning Strikes Twice

{Written- Tuesday April 2, 2013}
Tonight was just a typical Tuesday night. We made dinner, my husband went to the gym, we read a story before bed. Everything was within our normal routines. Tonight was just a typical Tuesday night, except that it wasn't.
S got off early, so we had an extra three hours together as a family. One third of that was spent visiting the puppy store at the mall where BK screamed "dawg" every time she saw a new puppy behind the glass and then laughed hysterically. One third was spent pushing BK in her pink whip to the park. The park is our haven. She swings and is in her own personal heaven. S plays like a little kid on all of the equipment. And I, I soak in the both of them. Their smiles, their pure joy. The last *extra* hour was spent in the kitchen while I cooked dinner. BK carried around pieces of Daisy's food and giggled uncontrollably while Daisymae chased her. S sat in the kitchen while we caught up on our day and snuck kisses.
From an outsiders perspective it was nothing special. Just your typical family of three going about their evening routine. But to me, to me it was heaven. I had a permanent smile on my face. My happiness just radiated from every pore.
It got me to thinking though, as happy as I am {truly 1000% satisfied with my life, not lacking a thing}, does it get any better than this? Can lightning strike twice? Will we be so lucky to be blessed to one day expand our family and have another baby so perfect and delightful as BK? It just seems impossible. I know it isn't, I know that God's grace is SO good. I'm not saying it will happen, I'm simply saying that it could happen.
Life just doesnt seem like it could possibly get any better than it is. I am so blessed. Blessed with my true soul mate, the man that God picked specifically for me. Blessed with a beautiful, crazy intelligent, sweet, funny, perfect daughter. My family is kind and supportive. I have good friends that the Lord brought into my life for a reason. I have wonderful worldly possessions.  I am blessed.
My life was not always this way. It was not always everything I dreamt it to be. But now I wake up and I think to myself...

You have everything you ever wanted. Welcome to your happily ever after.

Blissdom - The Left Behind

Unless you've been living under a rock you know that Blissdom is this week. Blissdom is one of if not the biggest blogger conferences, it's supposed to be spectacular. I remember reading all about it last year, before I had even started to blog, and thinking about how badly I wanted to be there. Most of my favorite ladies were there {Kelly, AP, Molly}, and they're all going again this year.  In retrospect I should have started blogging right then, perhaps if that was the case then I would be there this year, but hey hindsight is 20-20 right?! I digress. I remember how exhilarated everyone came back. The stories they told. The fun they had. The friendships that were formed. It was like they were all on fire.

So today I'm talking about the top three reasons that I'm jealous of all the fabulous bloggers at Blissdom.

1) The Party. I'm a self-proclaimed reformed party girl, so this really appeals to my inner fun girl. There are parties, concerts, a hotel slumber party. And don't forget being surrounded, in real life, by all the fabulous ladies that you know and love from blogland.

2) The Confidence. The ladies that attend this conference are strong. They have massive audiences that they appeal to with every post.  They have found their blogging voice. I feel like I am still struggling in this area a little bit. It's an area that I am definitely trying to improve.

3) The Vacation. I mean who wouldnt want three days away? Plus, this year it is in Texas and Texas is home for me. I always love a return to my old stomping grounds.

Now that I have my own blog I am so excited to have the opportunity to go. So I'm making it my mission to go next year.

Need to be a little bit stronger

Last night I was super lame. I passed up a chance to go out and celebrate St. Patrick's Day with some of my favorite people in favor of pajamas and reruns on tv. I realized I was being lame the second I made the decision, but I'm one of those people that makes a decision and is super stubborn and sticks to it {even if they realize it was the wrong decision}. The horrible part was that I knew instantly that S was super bummed, even though he did get to enjoy a night out he had to do it sans me. See, every since we had BK I have had a really hard time leaving her. I have found myself bailing on plans last minute, or coming up with excuses, or just not making plans at all. And the time has come for change.

See I realized that not only am I preventing myself from having fun, but I'm also preventing BK from learning independence from me. I'm not allowing BK the opportunity to gain independence in forming relationships with others. Don't get me wrong, she interacts with others , just not without me standing by.  Brooklyn Grace is a very independent little girl, but I want her to be confident in herself in forming relationships as well. I want her to realize that other people see just how funny + smart + sweet she is, it's not just mama's rose colored glasses.

I'm also putting a damper on my marriage. While my love with S is stronger now than ever before I am definitely not as fun as before. I used to be the life of the party, or at least a piece of it. I used to keep my husband on his toes. I used to be adventurous. I want to get all of that back. Most of all I never want my husband to feel as if the baby is my only priority. Our blissful marriage and fun nights are what got us BK in the first place.

So I need to work on balance. I need to be better at being mama, friend, wife, daughter, and sister. I know that it won't come extremely quickly, and probably not extremely easily, but I need to make more of a conscious effort. So here's to hoping that I get better. Here's to hoping that a little bit of the old me will make a come back. Wish me luck.

Celebrating you

Happy Birthday Brooklyn Grace! You are officially one year old, you're a toddler. I'm not quite sure who decided that one was no longer a baby, because even though you have grown so much you are still very much my baby. It is crazy to think that this time one year ago you were about to make your debut into the world. All five pounds and thirteen glorious ounces of you. Technically you came a week early, though the 26 hours of labor totally made up for that. I remember when they first laid you on my chest I was in shock. You were so tiny. I just kept thinking, so tiny yet so mighty. This was what made those big kicks? This baby caused all that morning sickness? This teeny tiny baby created SO much joy? Your dad and I just looked at each other over you and smiled. He gave me the sweetest kiss and then he looked at you and really took you in. The love in his eyes was the most beautiful thing, it was so pure and so deep. He still looks at you that way, and it still brings the happiest tears to my eyes. It's funny that I didn't cry right away. Most moms said they cried as soon as their baby was placed on their chest. I had to take in your perfection first. But don't worry, those tears they came. They still come. I will cry over you for the rest of your life. Tears of joy, tears of thankfulness, sometimes tears of frustration, but always always tears of love.

All parents know that the first year is a blur and it just flies right by. I am so very thankful that I have been able to stay home with you and embrace every little moment. I couldn't imagine having to miss a single second. This might seem silly to you, but I thought I would recap a normal day for us. I don't want to forget anything about this year. I love the way you're so sleepy and sweet in the morning. You always have the brightest smile on your face. We laugh at how it takes you a while to get your balance, so you usually tip over the first time you sit up. Then you crawl over to me and nuzzle your head on my chest. The first word out of your mouth is always Daisy. You are crazy about your puppy. I love sitting on the kitchen counter and eating our breakfast together. The way your eyes light up and you shake your booty when Doc McStuffins comes on. Your morning nap is always a battle of the wills, somedays you win and somedays I do. We get dressed after our nap but before lunch. You hate the process of getting dressed, you would much rather be naked, but you are quite the fashionista. Lunch is usually eaten in my lap or on the couch, sometimes both. In the afternoon we play blocks and read books, sometimes we run errands or go shopping. You're still taking a second nap during the day, usually its around 4pm. After the second nap you help me cook dinner. You go into your drawer in the kitchen and get out spoons and bowls while I'm at the stove. Sometimes your venture off independently, whether it's to chase Daisy or just play with your toys. Your daddy gets home before dinner and you just love to see him come through that door. Your usually go racing off to meet him, crawling along with a block in each hand, saying "dada dada dada". After we eat dinner we head up to bath. You are such a water baby, you have always loved bath time. You usually spend 30 minutes in there. Then we do lotion and books, and crawl into bed. Some days you go down easily, some days I think you'll never go to sleep. Each day ends with me thankful that I got to spend it with you though.

You are so funny and so kind. You make friends everywhere we go. Everyone comments on what a sweet and happy girl you are, and they're right you are always smiling and laughing. You are brave and independent. You are tiny yet so mighty.

Last night we sat in your room and nursed in your rocker. I couldnt help but think about when we first brought you home. I remember sitting in that very same rocker with you all curled up barely bigger than my hands,  and thinking about how very tiny you looked in that room. Now your arms and legs hang over the sides of the rocker, and the room feels so small compared to you. It's crazy how much changes in a year.

In one year you have grown by leaps and bounds. In one year you have taught me true life lessons. I cannot wait to see what you can do with the many more years ahead of you.

Brooklyn Grace thank you so very much for giving me the best year of my life. Happy Birthday beautiful girl.

The Grass is Always Greener

Today I want to talk about the one uppers. You know the bitches that always have to steal your thunder. You go into a conversation super excited about your new shoes, or the date night you just had, the two pounds you just lost, or the fact that you just stuffed your face with three slices of pizza. Then wham someone else got their shoes for free, just returned from Paris, has 2% body fat, or brought in homemade pie for the whole office.

Dont you just hate those people? I mean why do they have to 1up your story? Couldnt they have saved their tale for another day and just expressed some enthusiasm for you? Would that have killed them?

I mean that used to really bust my butt, but now I'm a mom and I shit you not it has been taken to a WHOLE new level. I'm a new mom, I brag about my kid on the regular, obvi. I truly love to hear about what other kids are doing, mainly because I have no clue what I'm doing, but I think it's just part of my new job description. Mom's need reassurance, actually all people need reassurance and affirmation, but moms really need it. What I dont need is to know how your child is some kind of Beethoven Nobel Peace Prize winning genius. Some days it's all I can do to keep my child fed and alive, please dont rub in my face that your 10 month old counted to ten in two different languages while taking their first step. I mean, I'm happy for your kid and all but sometimes I just want you to say "wow that is so cool that BK did that today."

I've been feeling that way a bit with blogging lately. I just reached 400 followers, FOUR HUNDRED y'all! And that is huge for me. I've barely been blogging for two months and I put my heart and soul on this here page. I am so thankful that you come, read, and interract with me. With that being said, I sat at 390 for like two weeks. I remember seeing some people blow up from 200 to 400 like literally over night and seeing it all over twitter and all of the congratulations those people got. Me I threw my own little party with some champs and BK shared some puffs with me, pretty good party if you ask me.

What I realized though was that I cannot compare myself to others. {Two of my favorite bloggers also wrote posts on similar topics. You can read Whitney's & TJ's.} Each of us are on our own path, we have our own story to share, and we need to embrace that. We should spend more time basking in our own joys and lifting each other up opposed to competing with one another.

Love the life you live.

Girls

Being a girl is tricky, maybe I should say having friends as a girl is tricky. If you're a girl that has lots of guy friends then you're definitely going to be classified as a hussy. Hey you probably aren't a hussy, but I'm just being honest. Girls don't want other girls hanging around their men. The problem though is that girls are drama. Like Jerry Springer type drama on the regular, and lets be honest

Now I could be stereotyping and you could disagree, but as a girl I think your friendships fall into one of three categories.

1) You're a guys girl
-You proclaim on the regular that "you would rather hang out with guys" or "you have way more guy friends than girl friends". I'm going to go ahead and say you're not a two bit hussy and you just prefer to have friendships that are low maintenance and drama free. That's how it is with most guys, no drama. Just be careful that they try and get in your pants, which is bound to happen. Because I know that all of you reading this are of the super hott body variety, you're here so you're obviously fabulous.

2) You have a small tight knit group of friends
-Most of your girl friends have probably been in your life for ten or more years, minus the few you picked up in college or at the work place. Y'all move as a pack and rarely have one on one dates, it usally all or nothing. You always have someone on speed dial to grab a cocktail or go see a movie. Your bridesmaids have been picked out since before you met your fiance. And you should consider yourself pretty lucky in the friends department.

3) You tend to stick to yourself
-You may have one or two best friends, not including your significant other who you definitely claim as your "best friend and the only one you need", and you have a handful of nice acquaintances. People you would strike up conversation with at the mall or might even grab a drink with on occasions, but they aren't the kind of people that you share your deepest secrets with.

I, myself, fall into group three. I have a best friend that lives in Texas, two cousins that I consider my best friends, and a few other close friends. I have 2 bloggy friends that I know I would be joined at the hip with if we lived in the same state. I proudly claim S & BK as my soul mates. Sometimes I dont have someone to see a chick flick with me or to catch happy hour when I need it, but honestly I'm ok with that. I'm happy and thankful for what I do have. I find that navigating relationships with girls is tricky. Maybe I'm just weary from my run-ins with the mean girls in high school and college. I could probably put myself out there a little more, but where do you even find friends as an adult? It's not like I'm in class to meet new people every semester, I almost always have a mini me attached to my hip, and I enjoy spending most nights cuddled on the couch with my mister. Not that I wouldnt enjoy expanding my friendship circle, but I'm pretty comfortable in my life.

What about you? What's your friendship situation?

Unplug + a super yummy recipe

Our trip to Jamaica reminded me of one very important thing... time is precious! We were completely unplugged on our trip, and it was heaven. Honest to goodness I didnt miss the constant stream of technology.

Now don't get me wrong #Ilovesocialmedia. What I realized though was that I dont have to have my phone ipad laptop glued to me. I need to unplug throughout the day and really be PRESENT in those moments.

My daughter is only this small once. We will only get to experience the Firsts, once. My husband and I only get so much one on one time. There is only so much quiet and peace in every day.

So I made a new family rule. From 5-8pm every day we are unplugged. No social media. No texting. No phone calls.

We will cook and snuggle and talk and truly enjoy eachothers company. We will do bath time and story time and bed time routines together. Then the hubby and I will snuggle and spend some quality time together. It definitely is going to be an adjustment, I'm "trained" to keep checking in with technology. But I definitely think this is going to be huge for my family. Plus, we need to start setting an example for BK. I dont want BK sitting at the dinner table or in the car glued to her ipod or iphone. I want her to grow up with dinners at the table, a family that talks and interacts. We started last night, and if last nights meal was any indication as to how things will go then Hot.damn. we're in for a treat!

I thought I'd share this recipe because it is delicious!

Ricotta Stuffed Shells w/ Lemon Champagne Sauce

Ingredients:
1     box jumbo stuffed shells
1     tablespoon minced garlic
1     15oz container ricotta cheese
2     lemons (juice and zest)
1/4  cup chopped dill or basil
1/2  pint heavy cream
1     bag mixed italian cheese
1     bunch fresh spinach, chopped
1     stick butter + 1 tablespoon
3/4  cup of Champagne

Directions:
1. Mix ricotta, juice of one lemon, zest of both lemons, garlic, and dill (or basil). Sit to the side.
2. Cook shells according to package until al dente. Strain and let cool.
3. While noodles cook/cool, melt butter over medium heat. Add in heavy cream, 1/2 bag of cheese, champagne, and juice from second lemon. Let simmer for about 10 minutes. Add or subtract champagne for thickness.
4. Melt tablespoon of butter. Add spinach in batches until all is cooked. Set to the side.
5. Fill shells with ricotta mixture. I found about a teaspoon per shell was a good ratio.
Photobucket
6. Sprinkle with half of leftover cheese. Spread spinach over shells.
Photobucket
7. Pour champagne sauce over shells and cover with remaining cheese.
Photobucket
8. Bake for 15 minutes at 350.

9. Let settle for 3 minutes & enjoy!

Resolved

So I took yesterday to really analyze my monthly goals. Here is what I came up with:

January
work life
February
love
March
writing
April
exercise
May
friendships
June
food
July
exploration
August
style
September
organization
October
reading
November
reflection
December
giving

I think my list flows pretty well for my life & I'm really looking forward to tackling a new area each month.

This month is work life. What work life? This SAHM is smoking something you must be thinking. Well that is the whole purpose of this month. Figuring out exactly where I am heading this year career wise. Brooklyn Grace is almost one. Realistically I got my time at home with her, and it was absolutely everything I dreamed it would be. I wouldnt trade a minute of it for the world. And I am so thankful that my husband was able to provide such amazing time and memories for me and Brooklyn. But am I ready to go back into the work force? Would it be worth it? Both financially and emotionally. What do I even want to do? Look for a teaching position for next year. Look for something part time. Look for something in a completely different field.

See I'm a dreamer. I'm a lover. I'm a true adventurer. I believe it's never too late to change your mind or go after you dreams. I fall in love with new ideas and new experiences. I'm not afraid of change or trying new things. While I believe that these can be great qualities to possess, they can also get me into trouble at times. I can be indecisive. Especially with regards to careers. I changed my major 4 times and graduated with way more credits than one needs. I dont know that I've yet found my "calling" with regards to the working world.

What do you do? Do you love it? Do you hate it?

So that's what I'm working on this month. I'll be doing some soul searching and possibly some job searching. Wish me luck.

That's the good stuff

Have y'all heard The Good Stuff by Kenny Chesney? If not you should. Here's the video.

As you know we just got back from Jamaica. It was amazing. I will do a full write up on it later this week. But our time in Jamaica got me to thinking.

I thought about Christmas, how different this year was than any other before it. We are new parents this year, and Christmas is 100% better. It's no longer about us or presents. It's all about her. The look on her face when she opened her presents. The squeal that she gave out when she saw that she had gotten a Lambie. The good stuff.

I thought about how nice it was to get five days of pure family time. No internet. No interruptions. Just us. Life gets busy y'all, and those five days were magic. Full of the good stuff.

I thought about how blessed I am. Married to my best friend. A man that makes me laugh, challenges me to be better, always keeping me on my toes. I have had the most amazing nine months with my precious angel. Brooklyn Grace is the best, most perfect thing we have ever done. We have an amazing support system of friends and family. We have wonderful "things". A life full of the good stuff.
